A Style Test

Well this year's Toronto ComicCon was pretty good. I got some nice drawings and watercolours that'll be going into my portfolio and felt like doing some more watercolour. But this time I figured I would try for a digital approach and was inspired by the very talented artist Fabien Mense. His colours are oh so nice. This was a pretty good test. I didn't expect the quick 30 sec sketch would look much better once coloured but it's surprising what some colour and shadows can do. Colourising the lineart helped a great deal as well to add some life into the guy. It looks a bit like watercolour which is great (and what I was aiming for) but can't compare to the real thing.

A couple nerd sketches

Just a couple of quick sketches for a character I'm working on. Gosh, if only my scanner wasn't so slow or finicky I could post better quality images. The guy on the left makes me think of a 70's programmer - or a hippie.

A sketch for a friend

This was done for a friend as a pick-me-up. Pretty happy how it turned out; which says a lot since I generally dislike my own stuff. Hopefully this is a bit of a turning point. Perhaps more posts to come?

Head Sketchin'

Just trying to experiment a little bit with drawing female faces. It's tricky referencing hair sometimes - I'm always tempted to draw every strand. I actually like how some of these turned out.

Noodling Around with Black and White

Just a page of me trying to get a feel for inking, done entirely in PS. I'll post a page of traditional inks sometime as I find you get way cooler effects with an actual brush. The two characters on the left were heavily inspired by an animated short called 'The Reward".

1st of the year

Took a while but I finally got something new up. Man I need a lot of work for rendering but I actually don't mind a couple of these. I've been trying to be less pessimistic about my own artwork and ya know what? I makes drawing a little easier if you're not dreading your own stuff. Done up in Photoshop (as evidenced by the arguably overused chalk brush). The signature refers to my DeviantArt username.
